Landseer

Black and white colouring, term used in Newfoundlands.

Layback

The angle of the shoulder blade, when viewed from the side. Also, receding nose of the Bulldog.

Leash

Three or more hounds

Leather

The flap of the ear

Leggy

Too long in the leg for correct balance

Leonine

Looking like a lion

Level back

The line of the back horizontal with the ground

Level bite

When the front teeth (incisors) of the upper and lower jaws meet exactly edge to edge. Pincer bite

Line breeding

The mating of relating dogs within a line or family or to a common ancestor

Lining of the ear

Inside of the ear flap

Linty

Soft coat texture in certain breeds

Lion clip

Traditionally body clipped from last rib, leaving mane on forequarters. Clipping on legs, back, face and tail according to breed

Lion colour

Tawny

Lippy

Pendulous lip or lips that do not fit tightly

Litter

The puppy or puppies of one whelping

Liver

A colour, also known as brown or chocolate

Loaded shoulders

When the shoulder blades are pushed out from the body by overdevelopment of the muscles

Region of the body on either side of vertebral column between the last ribs and hindquarters

When tail is set on below the level of topline; or ears set below line of correct placement for breed

Term used for marking in skull of King Charles Spaniel and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, sometimes known as "Blenheim Spot"

The upper and lower jaw bones containing the teeth. Also used to describe the bite e.g "a bad mouth" or "a good mouth". Sometimes used in retreiving parlance to describe the ability of the dog when carrying game, e.g "soft" mouth or "hard" mouth
